Barcelona is a hotel opened in 2012 in San Juan de los Remedios, the eighth village recognized as Cuba's oldest, founded in 1578 and known as the birthplace of Parrandas, possibly the largest and oldest traditional Cuban feast. Its long history is particularly evident in the city center (declared a National Historic Landmark in 1980), where the seventeenth-century Spanish architecture can still be found almost intact.
Hotel Barcelona, which is only a block away from Hotel E Mascotte, shares its location opposite the Plaza Mayor, which is the only one in Cuba with two churches, one of them being the main attraction of the city, the Parish of San Juan Bautista, which contains 13 beautifully decorated gold altars, and other church known as "Our Lady of Good Voyage".
IMPORTANT: Please book the Standard room and make a special request (during the booking process) to be upgraded to the Junior Suite on arrival. You will most probably be asked to pay a small cash supplement. The 5 Junior Suites are highly recommended & worth requesting, but of course subject to availability.
This town is a typical, but beautiful, example of Spanish colonial architecture. The intrusion of the sugar and cattle industries have not detracted from its laid-back atmosphere. The centre is marked by the Plaza Marti and, as with all Spanish cities, the streets span out from the Plaza with well thought out symmetry. The Plaza Marti is similar in style to the Plaza Mayor in Trinidad.
Other interesting things to see are The Museum of the Remedion Parrandas and The Church of San Juan Batista de Remedios.
