Nigel's Special Hotels
If you like the thought of staying in an attractive, inexpensive old colonial house that is perfectly placed for enjoying the hidden gem of Baracoa, you should try La Habanera.

La Habanera is a small, recently restored hotel on a pedestrianised street just off the main plaza. Its facilities include a lobby bar & restaurant, which provide good food & drink, though there is more choice in the many bars & restaurants nearby. The four rooms at the front of La Habanera share a long balcony & rocking chairs where you can relax in the shade & watch vibrant Baracoa at your own pace.

A pastel-pink former colonial residence with an atrium courtyard, Hotel La Habanera provides low-cost elegance & charm. This charm also extends to La Habanera’s staff who are very friendly & helpful (the housekeeper will do your laundry for a small fee). As may be expected with its central location, there is noise from the bars & live music of the main square so this should be taken into account when booking.

La Habanera hotel is a great choice if you want to enjoy the delights of Baracoa on a budget, particularly if you enjoy nightlife or want easy access to the central attractions.

La Habanera has 12 guest rooms which are all ensuite with air conditioning, satellite TV & mini fridge. Some visitors have found them a little small, though they are comfortable & have the high ceilings expected in old colonial properties. All rooms have twin beds & are well maintained by enthusiastic maids who leave towel art for guests.

Guide to Baracoa
Cuba's remote Baracoa really has it all, for plenty of awe-inspiring experiences. It has Cuba's biggest rivers, mystical jungle mountains, biodiverse tropical wildlife, hillside plantations of coffee & chocolate (cacao), secluded beaches, coral reefs, the longest history, ancient traditions, vibrant culture and general spellbinding charisma.

Baracoa City is situated on a bay close to the eastern tip of the island of Cuba where the Caribbean Sea meets the Atlantic Ocean. Founded in 1512 by Diego Velazquez, Baracoa is Cuba's oldest European settlement. Things are pretty laid back in this town and the abundance of palm trees along this coast give it a South Pacific feel.

The fact that this was an important Spanish outpost is evidenced by the three impressive forts: Fuerte Matachin, now housing the museo municipal; Fuerte de la Punta, now refitted with a restaurant; and El Castillo de Seboruco, which is now a pleasant hotel.

On calle Antonio Maceo, you'll find people queuing for hot chocolate drinks in the baking tropical sun at the Casa del Chocolate, opposite is a lovely Casa de la Trova, holding rooftop performances and you can't forget to visit Plaza Independencia (it is the focal point for community life in the city), Yunque de Baracoa and The Stone Zoo, which comprises a multitude of stone animals.
